Beijing 2008? More Like Cha-ching!

It seems that while the top producing agents of YTB were sailing the Sensation to Bahamas to feed the ego of the Tomers, the details of the Olympic packages appeared on their websites. Well, so did the issues on Ted Lindauer's as well, but that is an entirely different discussion.

As expected, the "unbeatable" deal, is. Actually, it is really not that much of a deal to begin with and appears to be VERY restrictive. You can check it out here and snoop around for yourself.

URL: http://ytb.spring-tour.com/ytb/TourList.aspx

Just a few highlights for those interested in traveling to China for the Olympics:

  • 14 preselected departure dates ranging from 7-11 days
  • Currently (and curiously) all show that 9 positions have been sold in each package
  • Hotels are NOT guaranteed--just a disclaimer stating "or similar class"
  • One of the tours begins in New York and drops you off at the end in LA--odd
  • You do not have admission to all th events as excpected. It is typically 4 events over two days and they are first round events at that
  • The ceremony tickets seem to not be available
  • Some, but not all tickets have been acquired, there are a lot of "TBA"s for the events
  • It is NOT all inclusive as one Director insisted; most breakfasts are included and a few lunches and dinners--the Package #3 only offers one lunch and one dinner
  • The sightseeing is way too ambitious to enjoy the culture and history--The Great Wall AND the Summer Palace in one day and back to the hotel in time for dinner??
  • When you compare a 7 day YTB tour with an 11 night Globus tour (and add in event tickets and the opening ceremony tickets purchased separately), it costs $100 LESS per person--11 nights versus 7 days...opening ceremonies versus watching it in Chinese television in your hotel room..
  • Several competitive packages are available and they are on known airlines and are members of the United States Tour Operators Association (USTOA). I would rather fly Cathay Pacific than Shanghai Springs any day.

So, is this really a good deal for the consumers? Not so much! They are overpaying for an unknown product. Events are not guaranteed and they have considerable additional costs involved. Why does YTB feel it is such a good deal? Probably because they were able to negotiate a 25% commission on the program with Shanghai Springs. So, if you are planning on booking a trip to the Olympics, and are looking for a bottom of the barrel price and experience, I suggest you buy it from your local YTB Referring Travel Agent with one condition--negotiate the price. They have a minimum of $1000 per person and I would be willing to bet they will work with you. But remember, you do get what you pay for! If you are looking for an experience to last a lifetime (rather than a nightmare) then go ahead and call a local travel agent or book with a company with a solid reputation and one that might offer you some protection and service if things go wrong!

  1. "If your looking for an experience to last a lifetime, book with a local travel agent."

Just make sure you don't give them a check or cash.

For sure, no matter who flys me to China...after all I've learned about the traditional agents ripping off customers in 2007 and the total disregard of the traditional industry, it's "leaders", ex John, and the
media, I'm booking my travel online and direct with a major company like YTB, Travelocity...

    Now spin that.

  4. Earl,
You seem to have a really unhealthy dislike for traditional travel agents.
There is a lot of room for a spirited intelligent debate, but you seem to have gone around the bend.
I believe the majority of the posts on this board reflect that traditional agents have taken some time to investigate what the mlm model is about. John went to a meeting, and I challenged Proud to send me the meeting schedule here in Ohio so I could go check it out for myself. I believe that some MLMers like Doug have taken the time to explore that traditional agent's business model as well.
We obviously don't think it's as great as you do. But I don't believe that you will find traditional agents stooping to the level that you have to try to make a point.
Again, I have seen you on your fancy webcam, and you're old enough to be my dad Earl. If you would like to make the case that YTB is better than being a traditional agent, than please go ahead. If you're here to accuse traditional agents like myself of being criminals, you should give some thought to the side effects of what you are posting.
It is because of people like you making nasty, unprovable comments that people have such a low opinion of mlmers in the first place. You are damaging the reputation of YTB far more than you are enhancing it.

  5. Let's see Great Wall and Summer Palace in one day? Sounds like one of those get off the bus, get photo taken in front of the wall, get lavatory break, and back on the buss for Summer Palace...

I'd definitely push to sell this with Globus instead.....

The nine seats already booked on all tours? Sounds strange - perhaps holding seats for YTB staff to go along "free"?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Nine seats is a marketing tool--sometimes it works, but usually people are smart enough to vary the number. 9 on this one 4 on that one.....

SO the real deal is the money YTB ers make on this--has nothing to do with a deal for the travelers.

And how do they sell it? Just refer them to the website.

    AMAZING

    ReplyDelete
  7. EAB--you seem to give me more credit than I am due. I am glad you feel I am an "industry leader" but I am just a guy that can see through all the BS and is letting people know about it.

Honestly, YTB is NOT known to the masses like Travelocity or the others. Sure they may be known to your family and friends, but go on the street of your village (wait are you the....no, could it be....?) and ask someone if they know of YTB. The vast majority will say no.

So, ask a real player in the game (Travelocity, Orbitz, or a traditional agent) if they prefer to sell a reputable tour operator at 16% or an unknown at 25% when the reputable one offers so much more? Time and time again, I will take the reputable (USTOA, known carrier, known hotels, guaranteed events, more time, less money) one over the Shanghai Springs one. Sure 25% would be nice; but you know what....

If I send someone to China and the have a crappy time, I have $1000 to show for it. If I send someone wiht my reputable company and they have a good time, I have $640 to show for it. But I also have them coming back for more.

See, it is not about the transaction--it is about the relationship. SOmethign you YTBers will not ever get!

Now, go along EAB, your village called and said their idiot is missing--they want you back!

    ReplyDelete
  8. You mention relationships, John. One of YTBs big things is that they do "relationship marketing." Well, ask any traditional TA about relationship marketing. We do it all the time. We would rather have one client referral than 10 walk-ins. Why? Because we know that the referral is 10x more likely to book with us than Joe Blow walking in the door. How do you think many home-based agents get clients? Can't afford traditional advertising, it's all networking and referrals...

AFA Shanghai Spring. What you didn't mention was that the client that has a crappy time comes back and tells 10 friends they had a crappy time. And if something really crappy happens, you get sued. People sue over the most idiotic things - I can see someone claiming they weren't warned about the smog. Shanghai Spring is an unknown quantity in the US. No reputation or experience. As such, I'd be a fool for recommending them to a client and any client that would want me to book them I'd have sign their life away in waivers. I would not want to be responsible. I've never heard how much YTB has in E&O. I hope it's enough, just in case.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Naturally, John goes with the lowest nomber (7 day) rather than 11 day when comparing YTB to Globus.
And what kind of deal does Globus have for the Olympics, airfare, hotel and tours? Probably none!
Price it out in detail if you can. I'm quite sure it's going to come to a lot mor than what YTB is offering it for.

    GLOBUS
    Airfare:
    Hotel:
    Tour Wall:
    Tour Summer Palace:
    2 Olympic event tickets:

From what I see with Globus, it costs over $2k to stay in China for 9 days and this DOES NOT include airfare!!! That would be another $1500 or more!!!
    * Price listed does not include airfare. From the Dates & Prices section of the vacation, you can get an air quote. (taken from Globus website)

    Tours? Not included!
    Olympic tickets? Not included!

I didn't even see an Olympic package on Globus! No even an 11 day vacation! If it's there John, cough up the URL!

I'd hate to burst your bubble on your wishful thought, but YTBers DON'T go to the Olympics for free.

Hey William, with YTB, our clients can have the best of both worlds! They can either book it online or have an RTA contact the vendor directly and do it over the phone... and pay NO AGENT FEES!

Either way, they are getting a great experiece... no matter what John says.

    About the hotel guarantee...

Well, thee are many people going to China for the Olympics. The soner you book your trip, the most likely you will be able to stay inthe hotel you really want to stay in. Otherwise, it's whichever hotel has rooms left available. As travel agents, you should know this... and shouldn't have to try to put some crazy whacked out spin on it to deter those who don't know.

    Well, now they know!

Also, from the start it stated that the client doesn't get admission to all the events unless they purchase more tickets. I don't know you spun that into believing otherwise.

As far as TBA tickets not being issued.. Well, we all know that TBA stands for "To Be Announced". that's like saying, "I have a ticket, to sell you, but I don't know what it's for yet." Nobody's going to buy it until it's announced what it's for. DUH!

I said that I had an external source for the Tickets. So you needed to add them in. And the numbers I quoted did include airfare, event tickets and opening ceremonies. AIr was from LAX.

My point was that the 11 day Globus product was essentially the SAME price as the 5 day YTB product. YEs it is 5 days. Not 7 as you insisted before. And it offered a LOT more.

You yourself now say people will not buy ion a TBA--so why are all of your tickets (well a lot of them TBA)? Are you not selling any?

And yes the hotels are gonna be full, but a reputable operator will have blocked space at the hotels that is confirmed. So again ,you are wrong and are clueless as to how anything operates. Holding space is a no brainer here for this event. But it appears Shanghai either does not have it, or is holding some crappy hotels and going to explain that it is "similar"

Proud---did you look at any of the YTB packages? Can you show me which one was all inclusive? I missed that. Most breakfasts, a few lunches and dinners and a drive by of the Great Wall is NOT all inclusive and if you are marketing it as such, you and your "clients" are in for a RUDE awakening!

I love the testimonial page as well---all the directors and the Tomers!

John, again, where is the link to the globus site that states this trip?

First it was a 7 day trip to China... Now a 5 day??? John, get your facts straight! I go on my YTB site and see (2)9 day packages and an 11 day package which include airfare!

I go to Globus and at thwe bottom, it states that their packages DO NOT INCLUDE AIRFARE!!! It's right on the website! INDISPUTABLE!!!

So, a $2299.00 11 day package including air and tour to Beijing, Xi'an, Guilin, and Shanghai is not a better deal that something from Globus that would cost almost double??? If you say so.

  20. Lets see something here.....

Lowest Priced YTB China "Olympic" Trip for 9 days....$4349.00 per person, without insurance.

Globus Vacations "Highlights of China", including intra-China air/taxes and insurance for 10 days....$2308 per person. Add in R/T air from LAX for $1034.00 per person for a total of $3342.00 per person. Includes tours to Great Wall, the TerraCotta Warriors, a Li River Cruise, and the Shanghai Museum. Other excursion addons available for a max cost of $26pp.

Now, I'm not the best at math, so I used my trusty calculator, and the Globus trip gives me one more day, at $1007 per person LESS than the YTB trip! I think I'll book with the known entity, Globus!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Oh, and I can take that $1007 and use it to buy event tickets to the Olympics for events that I would want to see, from a reputable source as well, like the USOC.

What are the dates so we can verify your package price.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Since Globus isn't offering anything during the month of August, I used 9/1. But even if you use their most expensive date for this trip, which is 5/5/08, the price still come out less than YTB's at a total (including the air) of $3762 per person.

  27. John . . . You made me laugh on this one. I don't know if YTB's Spring Tour link was down, but it is up now. I know you are influential, but your YTB sucks rant and thinking that the site was down because of something that YOU "discovered"? I'm sure they know who you are, but please don't think that YTB Corporate beckons to your every call. You're passionate about your dislike of YTB and how we do things, but you're not controlling the daily pulse at YTB. And we're going to keeping moving forward - - thank you.

I WAS on the Coach's Cruise. I don't know if Proud was on the cruise because you had to qualify unless you were Level 2 Director or higher. I had two RTAs on my Team qualify with travel sales and two qualify with website sales. It was a great time and I spent time with some great people. Contrary to the doom and gloomers (see the "expert" YTBScam) thoughts about YTB, things are full speed ahead in 2008. We will have another record-setting year and recruit a lot more RTAs in the U.S.. . . and now in Canada, Bermuda and the Bahamas. 1 Billion in travel sales is the goal for 2008 and we will have a good shot at making it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I told you fools that the event tickets were NOT included in the Globus Package and that they had to be purchased separately. I have a source for the event tickets and if I include two events, and opening ceremonies, for an 11 day tour with Globus on August 6th departure from LAX on their Classic China tour, it is equivalent to the YTB price yet with so much more to offer the client.

Proud. If you could ask someone to get the link live again, I will be happy to point out that it is a 7 night 5 day trip.

    Day 1 Depart LAX
    Night 1 en route
    Day 2 Arrive China
    Night 2 China
    DaY 3 Sightseeing
    Night3 in China
Day 4 Sightseeing and olympic event
    Night 4 China
Day 5 Free and Olympic event
    Night 5 China
    Day 6 Depart

If I recall, so it is unwise to allude that there are 7 days in China.

Also, looking at the Olympic packages right now, I see nothing less than 7 days here. NO 5 DAYS as you say there are.

The 11 day packages are the best value for the dollar, because they are only $600 more than the 7 day! Normally, $600 would only get you a night and a half at a Raddison Hayatt or Hilton. Here, you're getting 4 extra days in China!

  43. Hey scam, if you went to a YTB website, you would be able to see what kind of hotel you'd be staying at. anyway, the hayatt and hilton were just an example.

BTW... aren't you late for work at Wal-Mart? There sure are a lot of carts out there in the parking lot.

John, I see that ainsworth included air,but you didn't.

Still, there's NO OLYMPIC PACKAGE with GLOBUS... because they are not doing business during the Olympics!
Maybe Globus has been handed a few Olympic packages, but instead of selling them to clients, the TA's are going to close the doors and go to the Olympics themselves. I'd be asking Golbus why they are so willing to lose such vital sales opportunities during the Olympics since you are such huge fans of them.

I guess that wondering why YTB has Olympic packages is more important than trying to figure out why you don't.

  44. And now for the "stuck-up" comment of the week...

"What is funny is that TTAs have for the longest time been masters of the multi-task. Working with clients, on hold with vendors, waiting for confirmations and so forth. Over the years, we learned how to work smarter."

As if to say that nobody else in the world knows how to multi-task... LOL!!!

"Honestly, YTB is NOT known to the masses like Travelocity or the others. Sure they may be known to your family and friends, but go on the street of your village (wait are you the....no, could it be....?) and ask someone if they know of YTB. The vast majority will say no."

because the other websites advertize on tv, radio, papers, billboards, etc. people don't know Travelocity, Orbitz, Expedia. they just know of them.

YTB uses word of mouth advertizing, so if someone doesn't know YTB today, they may know them tomorrow.

"See, it is not about the transaction--it is about the relationship. SOmethign you YTBers will not ever get!"

Really? John, I've got my loyal clients and to your surprise... they are not all family and friends. They are people who liked the way I helped them book their trips and came back for more. they also asked me for some business cards so hey can recommend me to their friends. don't sit there in your little office and tell me that YTB knows absolutely nothing about relationships with clients.

"Fortunately for me, there is always a TON of information out there to blog about. It seems each time one of the YTB loudmouths opens their mouths, it is something stoopit! So with them, it is an endless source of material and amusement."

Likewise John! You never cease to amuse me with all your misinformation and one-sidedness.

    "Lindauer says..."
Wow! here's a guy who has a personal vendetta against YTB, so everything he says MUST be true to John!

  45. "Who in their right mind would book a trip without knowing what kind of hotel your staying in? Thats nuts...nuts=YTB!"

You really are as ignorant as you sound. Ever hear of Priceline?

Like I said in an earlier post about the "scum of the earth"
that you didn't respond to, just plain rude!

  49. I'm very suprised that YTB is using the China Resources hotel in Beijing considering that it only has 2.5 stars on Trip Advisor, which is their Bible when it comes to hotel reviews.

  50. LIAR LIAR! Coach told them it was a 5 star all inclusive hotel!

  51. Coach says it is a Five Star all-inclusive and they serve rat and cat meat at the buffet.

  52. Well, for those that have been to China before, dog and cat is served all over the place. Food is bizarre!
