No Child Left Behind? Here's One!

Blogs by definition are usually more casual than the printed media. However, to be successful, it should be at least readable. I recently discovered a blog that is painful to read. I tried to run the text through the Google Translator and even Google had no idea on some of the language. Here is what I am talking about:
  • So understand it what you do to make it how hard you work we have people working it parttime and doing great.
  • So those people made a decision right their to change their lives today can I get an AMEN.
  • You see what have I been saying throughout this whole blog find your own way make your own money because these companies don't care about you if you work there 20 years to save them money you are out the door.
But the lack of professionalism aside, if you read some of the posts and comments you will see that like most other RTAs, the author does not know the facts about the industry and her own company.
  • Once you sign up as an RTA you schedule the First Class and you have to book $1500 in Travel to recieve you CLIA card. That is it that simple. And you can do that on your first booking.
  • Remember people airline tickets do not give good commission because the airline don't want to pay good commission remember that.
  • The commission rates are set by the Industry everyone gets the same commission rates.
  • I am telling you airline tickets don't get you much commission so don't even think it.
  • Imagine you booked lets say $3500 in travel on carnival commission is 16% or $560 Now you might say $560 but look at this way if you had a travel agency with overhead you have to pay for lights phone rent or lease business taxes county taxes and some more stuff that isn't alot. That why Travel Agents charge you a fee. To get more money out of you. Okay working with YTB you get 60% of that is $336 Did you earn $336 when you booked the trip with Expedia no.
Let's put the whole issue of the legality and legitimacy of YTB and other MLM agencies aside for a moment. Let's address the level of professionalism we have seen from the videos last week to the blog highlighted today. Really, as a consumer, would you be willing to book a $3500 cruise on Carnival with a person who has a hard time forming complete and legible sentences? Would you be willing to book a trip with someone that is either deliberately or accidentally posting false information? What happens when you sign up thinking you are receiving a $336 commission check for that Carnival cruise and you get only $150? What about those "air commissions"?

The author does speak the truth when she says people need to seek out the truth. However, her blog is not the place to do so. Take a read, if you can, and feel free to comment on her blog and ask the hard questions, post the real truth, and see what comes up.

  1. You, by any chance, aren't speaking of that Travelling Mom person, are you? I have tried to read her blog in the past, and with the lack of proper grammar and punctuation, it truly gives me a headache. I e-mailed her and suggested that she start using punctuation, and her response to me was "hey I don't need punctuation because obviously you understand all the information I get is from the internet the websites I just putting it in one place for the people" "If you know how to type on the computer you want to do less keystrokes so puncuation is not what I do
people don't need a comma they can read."

Now, I know that I am "persnikitty" when it comes to the proper usage of grammar and the like, that's just the educator coming out in me, but this just makes me weep. Whatever school system this person is a victim of needs some serious help. Yes, I said victim, and not product, because she truly is a victim.

  2. Oh gosh! I have a lot of questions.
First, it says "any agent who earns $25,000 per month in travel commissions for 12 months gets free health insurance." So, that means that only about 10 people in YTB have insurance.

Second, what the hell does this say? "Read the Donald endorses Network Marketing I guess he knows he is rich and the rich are not suffering we are the middleclass."

Third, did anyone else find it amusing that she tried to write about the fees that real travel agents pay, but doesn't seem to even have a grasp on her own business? Or how to write a sentence?
    Wow!
The blog is written by Traveling Moms. Is she two people??
YTB sure knows how to pick them!

  3. I missed 25K a month. But I think you are generous that 10 get insurance at that level.

It is 25K a year in insurance (does she even know her own policies?)

  4. Oh nope! I read it wrong. It says a year. So maybe 10 people do have the insurance after all.

  5. What's even more amusing is that she refers to the decision to join YTB as a "no brainer" and then offers up her blog as living proof that you really don't have to have a brain at all to join YTB. So, she's 100% right! It is a no brainer!!

  6. Go to her blog and read the comments under FAM TRIPS. She said you can get a IATA card through YTB. yup. that's a no brainer!!!

  7. Well it's a darn good thing she has her blog to keep her busy. I don't think she's going to be the winning contestant on "Are you smarter than a 5th grader" anytime soon.

This woman is a prime example of the embarassment YTB has brought to our industry. Can you imagine what kind of crap she is saying to people she is trying to sell travel to? Can she even spell travel??

Doesn't she realize that even as an independent contractor with a host agency, she too has to pay for business taxes, county taxes, etc. Even if 100% of her business is done over the internet, by email or by phone, and not one iota is done in person - she still has to abide by all local city, county, and state requirements. And if she lives in a state with seller of travel laws, she has to abide by those as well (she cannot assume that YTB being registered as a seller of travel with the state is sufficient). Same goes for selling to CLIENTS that reside in any of those states.

  9. It looks like she's in Maryland. John what are the seller of travel laws there?

  10. Wow, I've been out all day at educational seminars, and not a peep out of the peanut gallery! Imagine that. Could it be that there is no way to defend this?

Speaking of educational seminars, the conference that I am at is being put on by one of the largest travel suppliers in the country, and is open to all bona fide travel agents. Guess what? Didn't see 1 ytb agent all day. Saw lots of AMEX, Carlson/Travel Leaders, AAA, mom and pop shops......but no ytb. Wonder why that is? Oh, I know. Because all the seminars going on are about TRAVEL and have nothing to do with marketing and building a downline!

  11. There really are no seller of travel laws in Maryland. In fact, there are no special licenses needed at all. If she is selling to people in States that do have SOT laws though, she still has to comply with those.

Obviously, she still has to declare those commissions as income on her Federal 1040 and her Maryland return as well. Want to wager whether she does or not?

  12. Whether she does or not she gets a 1099 from YTB.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Will she get a 1099 if it's zero $$?

  14. YTB is a green company. They collect green for Coach, they make green statues and they are building a green building. I am sure they don't waste a penny of their money sending out zero 1099s. I think last year their 1099 postage ran them $12
