Deceptive Recruitment

I recently read a story about the less than ethical recruiting tactics that Primerica utilizes to find fresh meat for their MLM scheme. The story involved an unemployed middle of the road white collar worker who was called in for a "job interview". He bought a new suit, traveled 90 minutes to the location, paid to park, only to find out that it was no job offer, but a ruse to get him to sign up as a Primerica Rep.

Apparently the apple does not fall far from the tree.

Shirl Garcia of Gotta Get Away Travel is advertising for a "Paid Internship" on InternWeb.com.

Regardless, YTB is a supposed business opportunity. Portraying it as anything else is deceitful. Anyone applying to this job is not interning for anything. They are signing up to pay $500 and $49.95 a month for the opportunity to earn $106 a year!

  1. "Regardless, YTB is a supposed business opportunity. Portraying it as anything else is deceitful."

And if you look at what was posted I believe you will see that they specifically said it was an opportunity.

"The YTB companies offer two unique and powerful OPPORTUNITIES, that of referring travel agent or RTA and that of independent marketing representative or REP. The travel agent opportunity has an initial fee under $500 and a monthly license fee of $49.95. There is no fee or travel agency purchase required to be a REP. You may choose to participate in one or both opportunities. "

Looks to me like it was put right there in the ad that there was a cost. No deception. And I do believe I have seen similar advertisements from TTA's on the same types of sites with start-up costs.

  2. Well you do not advertise in a paid intern site--that is deceptive.

The ad has already been modified from when the post was created as well, but I am not going to get into that argument.

And finally, I do believe that YTB now precludes you from calling it a business opportunity.

Yeah, I bet you wouldn't want to get too deep on that one because you know it would be hypocritical?

"And finally, I do believe that YTB now precludes you from calling it a business opportunity"

The disclaimer was word for word of the approved disclaimer.

  4. Fireman--there is nothing hypocritical on this blog other than your comments. If you are seeking hypocrisy, head on over to www.thefactsaboutytb.com if you are looking for the truth, head to www.thefactsaboutytb.net

And regarding that business opportunity, direct from the new document that governs your speech, your actions and I am sure if you look deeply enough the time and duration of your bowel movements.....

    3.21 - INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR STATUS
Travel Site Owners are independent contractors and are not purchasers of a franchise or a
    business opportunity.

So there you have it--it specifically is NOT a business opportunity. But hey, we have maintained that for a long time!

  5. Semantics -- It is a business. It is an opportunity. But you are not purchasing a business opportunity. You become an independent contractor starting a business as an affiliate.

I know I am over my limit of grace postings, but sometimes I have to chime in. Bad habits are hard to break. It took me two days to break the cigarette habit.

  7. Rod - Will you pay 150,000 and please give Ms Fake Foam Liberty a home? She needs you to save her from from an embarrassing and dirty demise. Maybe Coach will go in on it with you...
