I just noticed that it appears that the Olympic Packages have been pulled from the front travel page of the RTA sites.
Back in February, I questioned that the sales were not materializing as hoped and was given a direct link to the sales site by someone that left a comment. Apparently that link is now dead.
A little more searching, and I was able to get to the Spring-YTB page and while there is a lot of talk about China, there is nothing on the Olympics. And this page was even a bit of a challenge to find. What happened?
- Was Shanghai Spring not able to pull through?
- Was YTB not able to produce?
- Was there a mistake?
- Another misunderstanding?
Oh-oh!
ReplyDeleteSo really, what did happen?
ReplyDeletean insider who blows -
ReplyDeleteOh-oh! It's there!

LB--can you please direct me to the OLYMPIC portion of that page you cut and pasted?
ReplyDeleteI cannot seem to locate the part that discusses this:
In an effort to provide more tours to China for the 2008 Olympics than
any other travel agency, YTB and Shanghai Spring International Travel
Service, the largest privately owned travel agency in China, will offer
exclusive 7 to 11 day tour packages and tickets for the Summer Olympics in
August 2008. Through this strategic partnership, YTB's Referring Travel
Agents (RTAs) are positioned to benefit from Shanghai Spring International
Travel Service's dominant position within the Chinese market, and pass
these savings on to their customers. YTB's customers will recognize value
not only in terms of cost savings, but also in terms of the exclusive
access to sold out events, attractions, and hotel accommodations.
"We are excited by our partnership agreement with Shanghai Spring
International Travel Service, and welcome the challenge to become the
largest tour provider to the 2008 Summer Olympics. Our RTAs have the
resources needed to rise to this challenge, and we are confident that we
will be able to provide our customers with the most professional service at
the most competitive rates," stated J. Kim Sorensen, President and CEO of
YTB Travel Network. "The Olympics remain the preeminent sporting event of
our time, and serve as a major draw for travelers around the world to visit
new destinations, and to enjoy live competitive sports. We look forward to
providing our customers the opportunity to partake in history, as China
holds its first Olympics."
You know the packages, the ones that all showed 9 seats sold on EVERY trip? Those ones!
It seems MUCH more expensive than YTB originally released, no?
ReplyDeleteThese are China Tours. NOT Olympic Packages. There is no mention of the Olympics in there at all.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what happened. I can think of a few things--sales were not there and Shanghai called it off. Sales were not as expected and YTB called it off. Or possibly Shanghai was selling tickets earmarked for Chinese nationals.
Well, I don't know, John. Each of those tours lists attendance at 3 "Special Events" while in Beijing. TBA, of course. Just what I want to give clients - a promise of "special events" which won't be announced until they get there... With a tour company I've never heard of...
ReplyDeleteSuspicious that no one from YTB is in here screaming that it is a lie. Probably back in their offices...shit I was hoping no one would find out about that.
ReplyDeleteWhat's the big deal. Is this what you are looking for? Click on this link...

Still, nothing showing about Olympic packages.
Here's the truth, no spin. The packages are still Olympic packages. Due to a copyright issue, the word "Olympics" has been removed.

National Fondation for Cancer Research
So, why is it a copyright issue for YTB when other tour operators have no problem selling the packages?
ReplyDeleteDo you now have to market them as "World spots competition tours"?
Sounds to me like Shanghai may not have any tickets.
ANd YTB is still comfortable dealing with these folks selling "Olympic" tours without the word "olympics"?
Um...I would not go to China with the intention of being there during/for the Olympics and not know what events I would be able to get tickets for - not for that money.
ReplyDeleteNo way.
I hear "watching Grass Grow" is a pretty popular Olympic event. I bet YTB has some tickets for those.
ReplyDeleteNever heard the YTbers so quiet. I wonder if they are trying to ask the upline what is going on with the China packages? Maybe they are just trying to figure out why they are spending all this money for nothing?
ReplyDeleteLOL Too Funny!

So your 0 for 2 now.
I was just visiting the infamous online travel site "travelswithfred" trying to put an olympic package together in China. I don't see anything and if there is I sure don't know how to find it. I guess I'll have to go somewhere else. Any helpwould be appreciated.
ReplyDeleteThanks
ytbscam -
ReplyDeleteWe are quiet because this topic is BORING . . .
It doesn't take much to get you excited.
sd martin ... travels with fred never touted having Olympic packages available, as YTB did (and now appear not to have).
ReplyDeletelb ... of course it's boring when it's true ... YTB can't say they're selling Olympic packages, cuz they aren't. Kind of takes the wind right out of the ol' sails...
Anonymous...you miss the point. YTB still offers the packages, I easily found them. It's just that once again the choice is out there for people to book vacations, hotels, and particular cruises with whichever internet booking site they choose. And it seems the competition offends people enough to create a vigilant blog to try and point out perceived deficiences. God Bless America.
ReplyDeleteSD--Did I issue a press release about being the EXCLUSIVE partner to provide Olympic Packages? Did I crow about selling thousands of packages? No! As a matter of fact, I have stated that I am steering clear of Olympic packages from prior experience.
ReplyDeletePlease provide us a direct link to the YTB packages. Because I consider myself to have a fairly good sense of getting around the Internet and I could not find them. So if I am not finding it too easily, you can be sure your "customers" are not either. You may want to talk to YTB HQ about that. But please do provide a direct link.
By the way, I went to several YTB sites looking and for some reason, I could not find out how to book a Royal Caribbean Cruise. Maybe I just misunderstood.
There is no copyright issue with the word "Olympics". There are other tour companies still offering Olympics packages. For example, http://www.rekotours.com/Olympic.htm
ReplyDeleteFrom an ardent YTB RTA over on Travel Weekly:
ReplyDeleteI heard due to the short timeframe between now and the start of the Olympics, Shanghai Spring is only booking Olympics packages through directly contacting Shenghai Springs. I took the Olympic promo off my signature until I received verification.
So which is it--copyright or too short of a timeframe? By the way, I am not buying either. Many other companies are offering Olympic packages, and certainly with 140,000 people promoting a product, 9 months is plenty of time to get some bookings. This Olympic deal was known last AUGUST at the annual convention so they could have at least started some buzz.
I wonder if YTB is just putting out a few different stories. After all, an RTA likely would not know if it was too short of a time or not.
So, what is the real story...and I think the real story here is the silence of the YTB folks on this issue.
WOW--the link I found yesterday is now a dead link!
ReplyDeleteHow strange!
John, there are many more promotions that just the Olympics. YTB does catre to other suppliers than silver spring tours. Does Travelocity, Expedia, Orbitz, etc. keep the same ad on the front page o their websites? NO! You are just scratching and clawing for info against YTB... even resorting to not only rely on what other sourcs make up, but being creative and making your own stuff up. your topics lately have been totally bogus... including the one where you pointed out my statement (from another topic) again. well again, you are still wrong on that topic. I posted a comment there to make you see the light.
ReplyDeleteBTW... Did you hear the news about Royal Carribean??? I'm glad that YTB doesn't deal with them... LOL!!!
I remember last fall the boasting about Shanghai Spring (the leading tour operator in China!) and this Olympic exculsive with YTB. Are you telling me that YTB's crack legal team overlooked copywrite laws? Huh? Not enough lead time? What?
ReplyDeleteSince RTA's have no control over the content of their websites, HQ can pull and place what they like. I wondered why the much touted Olympic package info was placed so poorly...and I bet the RTAs will never know either.
Silver Spring? Proud, don't you know the name of one of your preferred suppliers? Well, maybe they were not really all that preferred after all.
ReplyDeleteBTW... Click on Ole's link. When the page comes up, click the back utton. it woll take you there. There will be a box that shows up. Hit "Select" and then the "Summer Events". BINGO!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's so easy, an RTA can do it... LOL!!!
Proud--it is SHANGHAI SPRING TOURS...read the memo or check your backoffice. You know how to get there?
ReplyDeleteIs YTB selling Olympic Packages? If so, where are they. Why is there some secret code to find them. Real user friendly...go to Ole's site, when it errors, click back, and there you go! WTF is that?
Face it you were sold another line of crap from YTB and have no excuse or explanation. They keep you in the dark.
Proud--just did as you suggested and there are NO Olympic packages so your "Bingo" was a bit premature. They are offering tours for all dates BUT the olympics. What is the summer event? A primary school graduation?
ReplyDeleteShanghai Spring tours Eddie. Remember, I live in Fl, and we have a Silver Springs. I actually went to Silver Springs yesterday to meet with one of my RTAs to help her talk to someone about joining YTB. It was great! We had lunch at Bennigan's (my treat). I also brought my laptop and showed the presentation right there. Not only did that person join YTB, but a couple of others did as well. They just happened to be eating lunch in the right place at the right time. I signed 1 person ynder that RTA, 1 under the new person we originally went to meet, and 1 under the second new person. I didn't sign anyone under me personally. The word "silver" sliped in there... LOL!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure I'll be hearing about this one for a while.
Sure you did proud.
ReplyDeleteThat's funny John, because I found them!!!
ReplyDeleteGo to Ole's comment with the link. Click it. Then click "Back" in that window. See where it says "Region"? Search in that bar where it says "Summer Events" It'll take you to the page. Then, in the top left, click "summer Event..." again. There's your Olympic packages!
Again... BINGO!!! It's still there John!!!

Hahahahha I proved you wrong once again John!!!
ReplyDeleteHow do you like your crow?
Proud...again, please show me where it talks about the OLYMPICS. You know what they are right....
ReplyDeleteHere is a clip from the page you referenced:
Day 7 August 10, 2008 – Beijing
Begin the day with “Free Time” to sleep in or visit many fun summer events going on within Beijing from shopping to meeting people from around the world. YTB/Spring has planned a full day of entertainment for two very Special Events (Included will be the transfer fees between the hotel and these two special events)
Hotel: 4 star hotel (China Resources or same standard) (B)
It says that there are "special events" like shopping and meeting people from around the world. Then it talks about entertainment for "two very special events".
What are you doing? Baiting and Switching? Oh you thought these were Olympic events....I am so sorry!
I'm looking for the word "Olympics" and some sort of description of what the Beijing Summer Events are????
ReplyDeleteJohn, in the title, they state 2008summer events. This is in reference to the Olympics. Hey, if you really want to know it's true, why don't you go to Doug's website and book yourself a trip to the Olympics?
ReplyDeleteYou keep trying to spin things. I know you're wrong.
You know, if you get a client coming into your office, and you tell them you can't find something... they're going to walk out.
MY guess is that Shanghai is only authorized by the gov't to sell Olympic tickets to nationals.
ReplyDeleteWhen they entered into agreement with YTB, it was discovered and they were shot down. So now to avoid Chinese Gov't scrutiny (a good thing) they are calling them "summer events".
They indeed may be Olympic tickets, but as a consumer, I want to see the word Olympic if I am going to China, not some weak "summer event" crap.
I also bet that if they are Olympic tickets, they are the third rate events like they had on the site at one point and further, I bet that they may be denied entrance as the tickets will likely be coded for nationals, versus tourists. OK, so maybe a Chinese client of an RTA might sneak through, but an obvious westerner...not a chance in hell!
Sorry Proud. If the 'special event' is the
ReplyDeleteolympics then why not just say so. I think the above poster may have it right. YTB's Olympic packages are a dud. That's a pretty big piece of crow for you YTBers.
Proud--you are proof that education is not a requirement to be in YTB. You really do the morons of the world proud!
ReplyDeleteNow, let's say you decide to take one of your imaginary YTB checks to buy a new Lexus at the local dealer. (I know you would not as you would probably buy it off your website, but walk with me for a minute)...
You discuss all sorts of bells and whistles with the salesman and you agree to spend $50,000 on the car and they are going to deliver it to your home in a few weeks. On your receipt it does not mention the make, model, year, VIN number or anything at all. It just says, "car".
When you question the lack of detail, the dealer says, "well it's in reference to this car". Do you simply hand over the check and hope for the best? Or do you ask for some more detail? Like the VIN number, color, miles, options, etc?
Just trying to figure out how they hell your mind works.
John, I've got more education that you could ever dream of. I'm sorry if travel is the only thing you know about.
ReplyDeleteimaginary YTB checks.. LOL!!! That's a laugh!!!
You will never figure out how my mind works. I've already got you figured out though. it's not too hard.
If you have ever bought anything off the internet, ou will clearly know that when a receipt is printed, ALL the information about the product is clearly stated on it.
Now, think about this. you know that companies that are not direct sponsors of the SuperBowl or World Series CANNOT use those words in their ads. Well, it has become the same for the Olympics. It's called capitalizing on the copyright. Now if someone uses the word Olympics in their ad, and they are not a direct sponsor, they can be sued for millions for copyrght infringement. I bet you didn't know that... did you? Of course not! If they wanted to, every single company logo you have posted here, that company could turn around and sue you for copyright infringement, because you didn't use their logos with permisssion. Yes, they are copyrighted!
I recall someone else talking about this somewhere in this blog.
Just a little spin to your spin that you never even thought about.
Yeah, that's what I thought. Start a new topic john. this one is done!
ReplyDeleteYou're wrong again!
Why can other tour operators call them olympic packages then? And shouldn't the legal team have known about this prior to posting it all over the net?
ReplyDeleteTalk about spin Proud! you are the master! Love how John gets you all riled and I do believe it's because there is truth in what he says.
ReplyDeleteSo YTBs crack legal team blew it? Someone called YTB over using the word Olympics for some reason? Well. its easy to believe YTB hyped up something that was not kosher. Even a 'press relaease'! Funny. Other tour ops use it...book your trip here Proud.
http://www.olympic-vacations.com/
Have a good time.
Proud....ever hear of fair use? Look it up. As to your educational credentials, are you now claiming to be Seligman, PhD?
ReplyDeleteHow come there are dozens of operators that are selling Olympic packages complete with the logos? Or is YTB just too ethical?
Come on, for once, why not just shut up if you do not know an answer.
I admittedly do not have an answer on this now, but expect to in a day or so.
Not a boring topic at all considering that hoopla YTB created with it in December.
Eggs look good in frying pans..typically not on your face!
Stay tuned, not it is naptime Proud. We will be talking about big words later this afternoon. Sweet dreams of soliciting in Bennigans...which I am sure has a policy against soliciting.
If you "google" Beijing Olympics, you get hundreds of US companies - dozens that are well known to Travel Agents - using the word "Olympics" in their package descriptions. So why can't YTB use it? I also suspect that Shanghai Spring only has an allowance for Chinese Nationals.
ReplyDeleteWell, the all knowing Tom Coleman did say YTB was moving into China to tap that great market.... Does YTB take foreign ccs?
ReplyDeleteYou know, I should have guessed this China thing was a dud from the minute Tom saud it was the best thing since sliced bread.
Keep in mind that it is also the suppliers who set up the ads for the websites... NOT YTB! If you really want to know why it is the way it is, contact Shanghai Springs! They provide the wording. YTB puts up the ad.
ReplyDeleteHahaha, John, I was not soliciting in Bennigan's. My downline RTA and the new RTA decided to meet there. It was not solicitation as he was already interested in the business. No, he did not work at Bennigan's. While I was showing the business, two other people came over... on their own, grabbed some seats and joined us.
ReplyDeleteMany times, we do meet our new prospects at a restaurant, or take them to a restaurant and buy lunch/ dinner for them whether or not they join. It's a courteous way of thanking them for taking the time.
So, quit trying to spin my words John!
BTW, you say that you too don't know the answer, so why don't you shut up until you get your facts!!! Once you do that, then post it in a topic. Until You do that, I will keep on commenting!
About education... No, I don't have a PhD, but I'm sure I have more education than you.
Proud--please stop it. Conan already has a lock on the late night comedy bit!
ReplyDeleteIf you were pitching YTB to people in Bennigans that came over to you---you were soliciting. Your initial intent may have been a business meeting but it turned into a solicitation when you brought others (strangers) into the mix.
Education...well I am not going to comment on that, do I need to bring up the blog entry where it was me who had to explain the difference between "sales' and "commissions"? I know YTB is not concerned with things like that. They just need to make sure someone either has a credit card or can properly fill out a check for $50 a month.
Remember....commissions are ALWAYS less than sales. It's a tough concept, but I am sure once you get one or two sales under your belt, you might get the hang of it.
Ahhh... No! They came to me... on their own. I did not say... come here and join us. I did not solicit.
ReplyDeleteIf I'm walking down the street, and someone asks me for a business card, am i soliciting? NO! Why? They asked me!
you're not too bright John. Like i said... Shhhhhhhhhhhh!!!
No client in their right mind is going to spend that kind of money on a trip to the China, assuuming they "might" go to an Olympic event (and the Opening Ceremonies is definitely not a possibility). When spending that kind of money, clients want to know EXACTLY what they are getting ... not this "we'll surprise you in China" crap.
ReplyDeleteMy guess is they are TRYING to get Olympic tickets and in case they can't, their crack legal team can point to the packages and say "hey, we never said the special events would be Olympic events."
What is it with YTB and these cheap restaurants? I mean Bennegins? I have a relative who is passing out YTB cards to people at the local Ponderosa he works at.
ReplyDeleteI'd think with the "millions" hes making at YTB that he wouldn't even have to work.
Sarcasm 101 for those that don't get it.
So do tell, Proud. Where did you go to school? Ivy League? State U? Community college?
ReplyDeleteI believe Proud may be one of those Reps that YTB loves to refer to in their pitches....you know, Penn State or State Pen and Yale or Jail.....but since he is from Florida, that kind of rules out Pennsylvania....and Connecticut...hey wait, wasn't that...no...do you think?
ReplyDeleteIs Proud Christopher Paraldi ?
ReplyDeleteImagine Proud walking down the street and someone stops and asks him for his business card. I am having a hard time thinking that would ever happen. Has that happened to any of you? Most likey he got within 3 feet of a stranger and offered to change their life with YTB and forced the card on them.
ReplyDeleteI am working on another Olympic package. This time I have to go directly to the source to purchase as most general suppliers are not offering guaranteed tickets anymore. At least Cartan isn't. Here's what I have found out. US residents can ONLY purchase their tickets thru the official source and if you are a TA you must have an IATA number. No CLIA, no ARC. The package with the openning ceremony tickets is 14,000 per person!
ReplyDeleteStay tuned on this topic.
ReplyDelete
