A TTA In Training Part 2

  • “Diatribe of crap.”
  • “…to really think that any professional could get all the [travel] training they need in one afternoon is really ignorant on your part”
  • “Im sorry you missed that point....But lets be honest, you really weren't there to hear that were you?”
  • “But, the main point, is that ANN was indeed looking specifically for items that received far more weight in her post.”

I could go the sticks and stones route on this, but I won’t. Remember, I was told this wasn’t travel training, so I wasn’t expecting to hear all about Carnival Cruise Lines and what they offer, or becoming an Aruba, Scotland, Whatever Country Specialist. I was curious as to what it would be, so when the agenda said that Session 1 would be about YTB Travel Network, I wasn’t surprised when they started talking about the company structure, the different components of the RTA website, what vendors were represented, and what type of packages a client could book off the website. I was impressed with the Travel Portal. All this made sense to me. What started throwing up the red flags was when the Directors would gloss over certain things and spend an inordinate amount of time on others. What was being said versus what wasn’t being said, and the context it was said in.

This training was presented via Power Point. The Directors simply expounded on each slide as it came up. To give you examples of things that made me uncomfortable as a professional in the travel industry, take the ATM (Automated Travel Marketing). Compared to what is available to agencies as a whole, this CRM system is simplistic. The only thing it does is capture email addresses to send out the Steals and Deals newsletter. There were 6 slides showing how to enter those email addresses and what ATM does. Then look at how many slides there were on “Travel as an Insider” – there were 10 slides alone that had the phrase “Travel as an Insider” on them out of 19. RED FLAG. There were 2 that said “Travel Training” on them and absolutely no mention on those slides of Marc Mancini and the training modules he is developing for YTB (which is why I said it seemed to be an “Oh, BTW” thought – they verbally mentioned these modules, but didn’t really know anything about them or who was developing them). You would think that having Marc Mancini do this training for YTB would be a huge deal, but no, it hardly gets mentioned. No slides as an example of those modules or the specialist courses offered by vendors. RED FLAG. There were 10 slides that had the title Tax Deductions, but we never talked about the fact that RTAs are Independent Contractors in their relationship with YTB and the IRS requirements concerning that status. RED FLAG. And 1 slide that said E&O insurance is recommended. Explanation as to why? Brushed off. RED FLAG, RED FLAG, RED FLAG.

But let’s go back to the ATM. As any TTA B&M owner, IC, or home-based agent can tell you, the most valuable part of the business we own is our client list. It’s not the physical assets of the business. It bears repeating – our client list. Does YTB talk about this? No. Do the RTAs realize this? No. In fact, by the contract the RTAs sign, all clients belong to YTB. There is no protection for the RTA if YTB should one day decide to start marketing directly to the clients and bypass the RTA. [*gasp* “Coach would never do that!” – Don’t count on it.] Just think of the number of email addresses all those RTAs have stored in ATM, and YTB could take them over at any time. Every IC contract I’ve ever seen addresses the fact that my client is my client and not my host agency’s. The host agency cannot market to my clients without my permission. If I change hosts, my client list goes with me. Period.

But Directors don’t become Directors by selling travel. How would they know? One of the Directors became Level 1 in 7 months. How would she know?

How would any of you know? You accuse me of being ignorant and “looking” for signs. I don’t have to look when they are slapping me in the face, saying “Here I am, here I am!” Sorry, guys, but YOU need to get a clue. Coach and his minions are playing you for everything you’re worth. When you fail, it’s YOUR fault. When you succeed, YTB owns everything. The whole presentation was subtly telling me that being an RTA was ok, you could make a few bucks, get some great tax deductions, and get some cheap vacations, but just wait until we get to the afternoon – that’s where the real money is.

And you know, even though I hate the phrase, I’ll give you the “I make money while I sleep.” You do. Any agent that has a website clients can book on does. It’s the context it’s said in. However, I will go and thump the next Director who says “Over 208,000 B&M agencies have gone out of business in the last 8 years” in my presence.

Considering the post from earlier this morning, I thought that a follow up by Ann was appropriate. I also want to point out that for months, the MLM supporters have been telling the TTAs to go to the "travel" training, go to a CRTA training to see the "travel" side of YTB. We have heard that every program we attend is not the way it is supposed to be, yet YTB continues to allow these "not right" programs to continue. So, a TTA does attend one of the trainings and lo and behold, not much travel. I really do not think anyone is shocked--on either side. But what is surprising is that rather than discussing what she witnessed, the immediate reaction from YTB is the four bullet points above! Wait, did I say that was surprising? Sorry, that most certainly is NOT.

  1. Ann, if you need an additional thumper--call! But it is a bunch of huge red flags. However, how would an RTA know that? Really, if you attended a recruiting program on anything other than travel, would you know what the red flags are?

Many people have never heard of E&O insurance and when it is glanced over it just seems like another benefit (to them) of being in the business. That determination is based on knowing little and believing all they hear. And these folks are in the program and the believe in it so of course they are going to believe that all is well in the world.

How long did it take them to let the masses know that IATAN was no longer an option or that RCCL was no longer saleable?

  2. John, I am with you all the way on this topic.

This is part 2. How many more parts will it take until YTB wakes up on this subject?

John in response to your comment:

For the last two days, I've sounded the "clarion call",
"It ain't right, stop doing it",
"It ain't true, stop saying it" in reference to the RTA Travel Certification Program.

I'm not presently YTB, but we all know YTB is in my blood. So there is one YTBer on your blog who will "speak the truth in love."

I've been very busy on scam.com pointing out how bad the CRTA training is outdated. Here's my comments since last update:

    Let me paraphrase . . .

"I am not secure in myself and want to blame by failure in YTB on everyone but me. I want the TTAs to think I am a cool guy and willing to "get tough" with YTB. But I cannot get too tough or the RTAs will not like me. Really I am very confused. But, more than anything, I just want everyone to like me."

  4. YTB and TRAVEL: Would you please explain why you can bash everything and anyone that is anti-YTB but you can't identify yourself or your location even in the most general of terms? Is it because you're a coward and hides under the coffee table like a frightened kitten? Why not just be a man or woman and have some integrity for a change or are you quivering with fear at that thought?

How in the world is Coach ever going to get these problems solved, if you talk about the negatives?

    Are you serious?

    I agree with Coach.

A Director should never talk negatively about YTB in public.

Does a Director with Carnival Cruise Lines talk negatively about Carvival in public or on a stupid message board?

Name any Director of a company that talks negatively about their company.

I will then show you a former Director.

If they see changes that need to be made, it is done constuctively behind closed doors.

    YTB is a great company.

YTB is not a perfect company.

Name the perfect company and I will buy stock in it.

    YTB listens to the Directors.

Thus, many great things in the works.

Things that the Rod's of the gray world have no clue about.

YTB has experienced hyper-growth in the past 2 years.

They have gone from 140 to 356 employees in 17 months.

They have outgrown their facilities and have people working in various locations.

Never been late on a check.

    Fulfilling millions in travel.

    Here's a clue:

The last person they are going to listen to is a person like you who would not head across town until you were guaranteed all of the lights were going to be green.

    One last question, Rod . . .

Are you an adult man still living with your parents?

    Just curious.

I've already asked Ann this question and I am still waiting for her answer, but I will put it out here for anyone else to provide me with an answer:

How many B&M agencies have gone out of business in the last 8 years? I would like to have a reference to the answer.

  12. Checks for pennies are rarely late. Those are the easy bills to pay. I do recall a website from a former director and a possible suit about not getting paid and all sorts of shenanigans and coverups. I will see if I can find it.

Great! What differnce does that make? I'm an adult man. My mother lives with me (By the way she is 84 years old). She is very sick and needs homecare. Thus, that's why I have a home-based business.

I'm a IT Network Tech who works on the side now. I'm also interested in making a life selling travel.

I was active duty nearly 20 years with the USAF and took early retirement as Tech Sgt in 1995.

I have been divorced for 18 years and have two daughters. They both lived with their mother, my ex, until recently when my 23 year old daughter recently married "a man", we are a conservative Southern Baptist family, who is in the US Army and they moved to Hawaii.

My second daughter is 21 years of age and she is attending college at the University of Indiana Southeast and works a job or two.

I'm not a dork as you would like to believe. I'm every bit as intelligent as you maybe smarter.

My mother and I are active Southern Baptist church members in OKC.

    I am 52 years old.

That's me. What about you? I already know you are insecure.

  15. I am totally aware that this is John's blog and this is closely related to an issue between him, Doug, and myself regarding Candi May.

I feel that is is necessary to apologize publically for my remarks on Doug's blog about the validity of Candi May. Today he posted proof positive that has proven me to be wrong, inaccurate, and very remorseful. This is from my heart and I have sent Doug a personal email, posted an apology on his blog (subject to publication by him), and I am truly humbled.

I don't know what else I can say except that I am very sorry, I was wrong, and I am eating crow.

  16. Anon,

You could have put all that in one line like this:

    http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=James%201:8;&version=65;31;45;50;9;

    That's a good question?

No, I don't think I'm unstable, worried, lacking in faith.

You have brought up a good point though. You see, not everything on John's blog is wrong about YTB. Not everything on Doug's blog is right about YTB.

Yes, I have been back and forth on both sides every now and then. What's wrong with that as long as the means get to the desired end, a better YTB and a solution to the issues bothering the TTAs about YTB?

I'm not on this blogsite for making friends. That's what meetup.com is there for. I'm on this blog to learn about the problems from the travel professionals and address them when I can.

I'm not showing partiality. What really need understand is to not show partiality and get it down good. Don't show partiality:

  17. Yes we were wrong, and Candi was a TA. Don't know why it took this long to get the answers, sorry for doubting. We've admitted we were wrong.

Rod. -- I have NEVER said I didn't like you, if you remember I was one of the people who often sent you PM's or emails trying to help and even offered to help if you needed it. What I don't understand is the constant flip/flopping. Here your brethern, calling you the loser for giving up when it didn't work for you. Then, John..who I know also offered you any help needed, you made a nasty remark on Dougs blog after reading an article from 1999. That broke the straw.

I have nothing against you personally, or anyone on this blog for that matter. If you love YTB so much..stay..by all means and lose more money. If you love travel then get a real position with a real company and not an MLM and make more money. The choice is yours and yours alone. Stop flip/flopping..YTB is NOT going to change until Coach's check gets smaller and he bails on to the next big venture, the people realize "hey what the hell i'm not making the money I was told I would or getting the freebies they said I'd get", or the vendors wisen up and shut them down. Only you and you alone can decide, nobody else should do that for you.

Like Popeye said, "I am what I am."

Sometimes, I don't rethink my thoughts before hitting the "send" key and my comments come out more harmful than helpful. That's a weakness of being mortal.

Then you must admit, other times, I have some pretty thought provoking input.

You should be thankful that I'm not one-sided on the debate. When you TTAs are pretty much on I'm with you, but when YTB is on, I'm with them.

But, it's not the way YTB and TRAVEL: A Great Mix! has it figured: "By the way, Rod's favorite Major League Baseball Team is the one who wins the game that he attends."
