First the Olympics, then Dickinson, and now this? What is going on, seems like nothing is as it seems at YTB! What is the reasoning behind this one? Maybe it was not exclusive? Maybe it was a rip off? Maybe it was impractical? Maybe as Ted Lindauer suggested it was illegal?
But the part I like the best is how YTB stands behind the programs it sold. For those who purchased the program, deal with LVI exclusively.
This was reported in this week's Biz Report!
YTB DISCONTINUES
YTB FLY FREE PROGRAM
YTB has discontinued the YTB Fly Free Program. The links have been removed from the website. While we will not be selling memberships any longer, those who have purchased the program will be able to use the balance of their 12 month membership through LVI exclusively.
Oops...just chalk it up to another screw up by leaders that have no industry experience.
ReplyDeleteNext thing you know they will be offering discounted vacations when you buy from the seedy time share salespeople in Mexico!
So, they discontinued a program that wasn't working?
ReplyDeleteSeems like another good business decision.
Why make a big deal over a discontinued item. Every company discontinues stuff. I have a friend that owns a puzzle company. Here is a list of their discontinued items. Should we assume that the puzzle makers don't know about the puzzle business because they discontinued something?

First of all, generic travel (like the 2 Fly Free program) is not subject to the consumer fickleness like underwear styles or puzzles.
ReplyDeleteSecondly, if you listened to any of your own RTAs talk about this program, you would have thought that this was the third coming of Christ.
Many TTAs and other tried to point out that LVI was not exclusive to YTB, and that the program was indeed a rip off for consumers, but the RTAs would have none of it. It was the best and they were selling the crap out of it. Just like the Olympics.
And for their sake, I hope they were lying and not selling it--because that is a pretty shitty way to do business--sell someone something and then just let them flounder when you change your mind. Even the puzzle and underwear people will support their products--even when discontinued!
Here's a list of travel companies that have discontinued YTB:
ReplyDeleteRoyal Caribbean
Celebrity
IATAN
Azamara
Perrillo
ASTA
ARTA
A Plus Tours
And I am sure there are many more that have refused to do business to start with.
Now, I must go off to my Just Over Broke and earn my money.
I am surprised all these RTAs are awake, I thought the biggest perk of YTB was sleeping till you wanted to get up and no longer having a need for an alarm clock...at least that is what Candi told us in the video!
Lets not forget about the McKnight endowment for Neuroscience. They must not know much about neuroscience as they have discontinued programs as well..

Google discontinued their keyboard shortcut service back in 2006. Hmm, google must not know about that stuff..
ReplyDeleteGoogle's Discontinued Services
Google launched a lot of services over the time. Some were successful, others were decent, but very few were discontinued. Here's a list.
1. Google Keyboard Shortcuts (2002) - use your keyboard to navigate between search results.
Does anyone know why it was discountinued? Really? Was it a bad program? Not profitible? What?
ReplyDeleteClass, I am glad you all learned cut and past so well--hopefully you were not eating the paste!
ReplyDeleteNow if you can take a break from your deflection lessons and stick to the topic it would be appreciated. The Anon poster above had a decent question--why was it stopped?
And last time I checked, if I earn a degree from a discontinued program, the degree is still valid. The college or university does not say "oh it was discontinued so we wash our hands"
I don't like that YTB will not assist with a program they sold as exclusively theirs. But as it was sold by RTA's I guess referring to the supplier is par for the course. They get a hefty commission and the customer does the work or accepts that they threw their money away. Throwing money away... RTAs!
ReplyDeleteWhy was it discontinued?
ReplyDeleteMore than likely, no one was selling them.
It was a program that sounded good, but was difficult to explain and too restrictive.
I have a few hundred RTAs on my team and I have heard no complaints.
Had it been clothes, it would have found its way to the clearance rack.
Even saavy clothes buyers buy a dud from time to time.
No problem here.
If a customer purchased it, it makes sense that the vendor will fulfill it.
If the customer has a problem, YTB will take care of it.
As they always do.
Sounds like a good company to do business with.
YTB and TRAVEL: A Great Mix!
The issue is not that the program was discontinued - the two issues are:
ReplyDelete1. a poor decision was made to market that program in the first place; and,
2. having sold it (even a limited amount) YTB now refuses to service it.
"So, they discontinued a program that wasn't working?
ReplyDeleteSeems like another good business decision."
ROTFLMAO at that reasoning. You guys will say or believe anything so YTB comes out smelling like a rose. In this case, it's MANURE! The boys at the top have no industry experience, haven't a clue what they are doing and have no business in travel. Wake up idiots!
If the customer purchased it thru you, its YOUR responsibility to service it, not the supplier. Again, basic travel 101. You do not pawn your clients off on the supplier because your simply to lazy to work
ReplyDeleteUncle John said, "And last time I checked, if I earn a degree from a discontinued program, the degree is still valid."
ReplyDeleteYour degree in Advanced Propaganda Ethics will serve you for a life time.
I think it comes down to this. YTB is looking for any sign of good news. So this was just another one, release a press release, get all the YTB people humping each other and touting that this is the next great thing. The YTB people get all excited and then dump it when it fails like everything else. Same with the Olympic fiasco. Release press release, YTB people go spouting off about it being the next great thing, then cancel when it fails. Rinse and repeat.
ReplyDeleteSo now Doug err Mix, it clamoring that this was a great decision. How long before they run out of stuff to try to pump up your egos? The great Dr., Candi, the homeless woman. What next Bigfoot? Aliens?
And how long before YTB enters the puzzle business? I could see it now, a lifesize 3d puzzle of the "Croth".
WHAT HAPPENED?

ReplyDeleteHey we know we just sold you a 12 month contract - but go away - we don't stand behind our product.
what's with the discontinued puzzles et all? Is that supposed to be a justification for denying customer service? Frontier cancelling flights? I sincerely doubt any TTA is going to leave their customer standed because a flight was discontinued.
ReplyDeletesay i bought one of those discontinued puzzles from YTB toy store? If it was defective I could take it back and still get my money back, right? I don't believe the FFF program was to be purchased 'as is', no customer satisfaction guaranteed.
You people are tryung to deflect the real issue - and that is YTB has NO customer service unless someone treatens to go to, or does go to, the press.
well, what is new????

No I'm ROD. I have never posted annonymous on this blog.
I agree I'm not a great spokesman for YTB.
For what it's worth, IMO the person who failed to protect Coach's integrity by convincing him 2 Fly Free was credible and ready for launch ought to be a former confidant. This is a major corporate embarrasment and in hindsight I think that Coach must have been given only part of the truth when he was sold on the two-fly free program by his close confidants. The confidants may have passed it off to Coach saying 2 Fly Free Package was exclusive to YTB; however; did they let Coach know LVI was already doing business with Corporate America with a "free" Boarding Pass Vacation Incentive which only differed from the 2 Fly Free Program as a one-time use incentive, where the exclusive YTB 2 Fly Free Package is a 1 year program? I don't know. I have my doubts.
Or was Coach told about the free Boarding Pass vacation incentive and just didn't expect the publicity of the 2 Fly Free Program would activate a fiesty field of travel industry professionals into a broad probe into the validity of the program which eventually revealed a LVI Boarding Pass incentive program in existence which is given away to corporate America.
This may have been Ted Lindauer's fault for not supplying needed legal counsel prior to the launch. After the fact, Ted publishes a letter that the Two Fly Free program constitutes the offer and sale of Travel Club
Memberships and/or Club Memberships and/or Discount Buying Service Organization Memberships requiring the obtaining of licenses and the posting of surety bonds in various states prior to their offer and sale.
As an end result, I was embarrased as I wholeheartedly promoted the program on scam.com and the travel weekly forum as a challenger to the World Ventures Dream Trips. That endeavor soon came crashing down on me try as I did all I could to fight the fact that YTB would not have bought into a product/program inferior to little ole World Ventures.
We don't need the Olympics!

I'm a Chiefs fan and YTB didn't book me for any travel. I book thru Expedia as did all my pals.
ReplyDeleteI think your exaggerating or having a wishful thinking moment.

ReplyDeleteBut doesn't this happen over and over again? Shanghai Springs - immediately, a host of REAL Travel Agents noted and posted that Shanghai Springs is not authorized to sell events tickets to anyone but Chinese nationals ... we all knew! So Coach is constantly being taken advantage of by unscrupulous "confidants"? Come on now, don't you get it? COACH MAKES POOR DECISIONS! Over and over again.
BTW - this announcement about the Chiefs comes out and the stock immeidately begins to drop. What's that about? And will fans like that the Chiefs are now in some wierd way RTAs? Surely, they agreed to this because they believe they'll be reaping huge commmissions on the air and hotel pakcages? What's up with that? Anyone who has been following a team around for years will continue to do so with his/her current TA or for that matter, Orbitz, etc....
What's really interesting is that YTB issues a Press Release and nothing is up on the KC Chiefs' website. What kind of Communications Director do you people have that s/he would not make sure this was up and ready to go prior to announcement? The whole idea of a press release is get "buzz", get people interested, get them to go look at the new program - and yet there is nothing there! (Sort of like the MIA press release on the purchase of whatever that student tavel company is. Only this time there is a press release - it's just a half-assed one.)
ReplyDeleteWell, there is something...it's a new website - Chiefs Travel or something like that... but I have to agree that it is inexcusable that there's nothing on the Chiefs' site that directs one to this new travel site.....just like YTB - they drive no one to their RTAs sites - adn this is just simply another RTA site!

ReplyDeleteI'm sticking with Expedia, thanks very much. The Chiefs get enough of my money as it is!

My 2 cents

"Kinda funny how you post a link on here and then it gives you an error to the KC Chiefs page. Nice try trying to back your stories and lies."
ReplyDeleteSo you think the KC news is a lie? go to their main site at www.kcchiefs.com, click on News, then click on the top Feature story. Then click on the links in the story. Then call the Chiefs and tell them they're lying.
Chiefs and YTB - Losing mix.
ReplyDeleteI was told that YTB worked for months on that site. Well, it looks to me like every other YTB site with a different background. Amateurish and definitely not major league.
Go Expedia!
Idiots...
ReplyDeleteGaudi was a Spanish architect. His name is pronounced more like:
Gah ouw dee (best I can do on-line).
Gawdy is an adjective:
showy: brightly colored or showily decorated to an unpleasant or vulgar degree and pronounced:
Gaw dee
Yes, 'slutty" is a better word to use as "gawdy" is not the proper word to describe what you wanted to, but what can one expect from a HS barely-grad? Becuase if you graduated from college we'll need to make sure we don't send our kids to that one!
